Madelia Police warning online shoppers to take steps to curb porch pirates

Madelia Police say they had a report of a theft from a package left on the doorstep Tuesday but say instead of taking the package the thief ripped open the box and took the item with them.

Officials added the owner hopes the thief gets good use out of their cat’s flea and tick medication.

The department is also offering some tips, considering that the holiday shopping period is underway and the number of people who shop online, and says people should watch for package thieves and consider where and when they have packages delivered.

Police suggest alternative delivery sites for expensive gifts like to the workplace rather than unattended front steps.

Make sure orders won’t be arriving in the middle of trips or vacations, and investigators suggest people consider having a trusted friend or neighbor watch out for packages.

Camera and security systems certainly help, but police say they aren’t fool-proof in a bundled up Minnesota winter.
